Out goes the maybe corrupt president (overthrown thanks to some fiscal bullshit they made up on a purely political trial) and in comes a definitely corrupt president and the wave of religious conservatives to take this country back to the middle ages.
Wonderful.

The Portuguese Empire is back?

Well, that explains a lot, they tend to ruin everything.

The Portuguese arrived here in 1500 but only started settling during the 30's so no.

“Workers don’t need laws”
“burn the gays”
“kill the poor”
That sort of thing.

That’s a broad brush, Utah’s economy seems to be doing pretty great , for example. Sure we’ve got funny liquor laws but “ruin everything” might be a bit much.

Some politicians even had the cheek to say “God is behind this impeachment” as LEGAL BASIS to the trial.

Fiscal vs. religious. Notice the next 7 states on that ranking.

Those liquor laws DO ruin everything! but +1 on the broad brush... there are a lot of things wrong with brazil’s political structure

Well, if you could pick a “religious conservative” state...it would be hard pressed to find one that fit the bill more than Utah. I’m just saying, deeply religious people can be highly effective civil servants.

Your talking to somebody who lives in the American Mid-west, I hear this kind of stuff all the time.
Although, I’m sure it’s much worse for you. Our Supreme Court has done a decent job of smacking down stupidity lately

It has absolutely zero effect, Rio’s mayor probably (hopefully) won’t be reelected.

They certainly can be, however I’d say Utah is the exception.
Counterpoint: Mississippi

Yeah, but there’s a key difference. The conservative religious people in Utah do not have a Military Police at their disposal.

It probably is the exception. To be fair, our state motto is “industry”

This is a good motto, I’m a fan.

Well, as you’ve pointed out, motivated people will use whatever excuse they want to justify the actions that lead to the outcome they want. Utah’s religious majority is founded in base principles of agency as being a big deal in terms of gifts and rights for all people, plus it being founded in Utah principally as a result of being unjustifiably and violently driven out of other areas by Religiously conservative governments left a bad taste in the mouths of founders of people in authority using religion as an excuse to justify their actions.

Living an ocean away and not following Brazillian politics it’s hard to see which side is the most reliable/least unreliable. Having said that, religious conservatives in politics, ugh. I can find a single example where they’ve improved a society by imposing their subjective morals.
Please people, as long as I don’t objectively hurt anyone else, let me do as I please.

Neither side is completely trustworthy or faultless.
The simple way to explain is that the right has power and people will suffer.

Arizona. Most of our politicians are also LDS, but they consider the Utah guys liberal. We even had a whole city/police department run by a far right wind fundamentalist wing of the religion. It was like a Southwestern Taliban.

Religiously conservative governments left a bad taste in the mouths of founders of people in authority using religion as an excuse to justify their actions.
Not bad enough of a taste, since religion was the main justification the settlers used for claiming the lands of the Ute and Shoshone as their own. To their credit, their religion did prevent them from waging a war of genocide on the natives as non-Mormon settlers did in other areas. End result was the same, though.
